Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon Laceration

Unrepaired lacerations of the flexor hallucis longus in young athletes most often result in little loss of function.  The tendon has also been used for reconstruction of the Achilles tendon following tendinitis or rupture, with no loss of push-off strength.  Interconnections between the flexor hallucis longus and flexor digitorum longus tendons may be one factor responsible for this continued function.  Direct repair of the tendon may be difficult; extensive exposure is necessary because of tendinous retraction and may result in a painful scar and loss of flexion.
