Cervical Sprain Syndrome

Etiology / Epidemiology / Natural History

• Generally results from neck jambing during a collision injury during contact sports.

Clinical Evaluation

• Cervical ROM should be evaluated. If any limitations in ROM are identified the exam should be stopped, c-spine immobilized and c-spine xrays taken.
• Complete neurologic exam indicated and is negative in cerical sprains.

Xray / Diagnositc Tests

• Cervical spine xrays with flexion/extention views indicated for patients with persistent paresthesai, weakness, or less than full, pain-free ROM.
• Consider MRI for: marked limitation of cervical ROM; persistent pain; radicular symptoms.

Classification / Treatment

• Immobilization of the neck in a soft-collar with NSAIDs until full, pain free cervical ROM is restored.

• Cervical disc herniation
• Burners Syndrome
