Etiology / Epidemiology / Natural History
- Generally results from neck jambing during a collision injury during contact sports.
Clinical Evaluation
- Cervical ROM should be evaluated. If any limitations in ROM are identified the exam should be stopped, c-spine immobilized and c-spine xrays taken.
- Complete neurologic exam indicated and is negative in cerical sprains.
Xray / Diagnositc Tests
- Cervical spine xrays with flexion/extention views indicated for patients with persistent paresthesai, weakness, or less than full, pain-free ROM.
- Consider MRI for: marked limitation of cervical ROM; persistent pain; radicular symptoms.
Classification / Treatment
- Immobilization of the neck in a soft-collar with NSAIDs until full, pain free cervical ROM is restored.
