Radioulnar Synostosis Etiology / Epidemiology / Natural History

• Occurs after fractures or surgical procedures about the elbow such as distal biceps tendon repair.
• More common after two-incision distal biceps repair than single incision repairs.
• Incident theoretically can be decreased by early range of motion after fracture, soft tissue injury or surgery.
• May also be congenital: see Congenital Radioulnar synostosis

Radioulnar Synostosis Xray / Diagnositc Tests

• A/P, lateral and oblique elbow films indicated. Synostosis is evident on xrays.

Radioulnar Synostosis Classification / Treatment

• Treatment: excision of the synostosis. Numerous materials have been proposed to interpose after resection of the synostosis including fat, muscle, fascia, and silicon.
• Radial osteotomy with wedge removal.
