Tietze’s syndrome Etiology / Epidemiology / Natural History

• Benign, selflimiting nonsuppurative swelling of the anterior chest wall.
• May have sudden or gradual onset.
• Generally unilateral.

Tietze’s syndrome Anatomy

• Most commonly involves the second, third, and fourth costosternal articulations, with the sternoclavicular joint less commonly involved.

Tietze’s syndrome Clinical Evaluation

• nonfluctuant, firm, tender swelling involving the articulations of the costosternal and/or sternoclavicular joints.

Tietze’s syndrome Xray / Diagnositc Tests

• AP view, apical lordotic view, serendipity view. Normal
• CT helpful in differential diagnosis. Normal in Tietze's syndrome.
• MRI: normal
• Labs: normal ESR, CRP. WBC

Tietze’s syndrome Classification / Treatment

• Generally self-limited. Pain resolves within days to weeks. Swelling may persist for months or years.
