Tourniquet

 
  • wide cuffs require lower cuff preasures
  • do not exceed 2hrs without 30min reperfusion period
  • pad beneath tourniquet
  • pressures=50-75mmHg above systolic for UE, 100-150 for LE

Tourniquet Complications

  • neuropraxia
  • wound hematoma
  • vascular injury
  • tissue necrosis
  • compartment syndrome
  • Infection: reused nonsterile tourniquets are frequently colonized with bacteria and may be factor in surgical site infections. (Walsh EF, Orthopedics 2006;29:709).
